As World Economies Hit Headwinds, Domain Name Growth Stagnates

As economies around the world hit headwinds with rising prices, worker shortages and interest rate rises, it seems domain name registration growth has stagnated. During the second quarter of 2022, the total number of domain names registered across all top-level domains increased by 1.0 million, or 0.3%, in the second quarter of 2022 according to Verisign’s latest Domain Name Industry Brief released this week. In the 12 months to 30 June, domain name registrations increased by 10.4 million, or 3.0%. This took the total to 351.5 million domain name registrations.

ICANN Announces Face-to-Face 46th Key Ceremony

[news release] ICANN is pleased to announce the partial resumption of face-to-face key signing key (KSK) ceremonies following the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the ceremony is not a return to full regular operations, it represents another step toward this eventual goal.

Registration and Website For ICANN75, In-Person and Virtual, Now Live

Registration for the ICANN75 Annual General Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is open and the dedicated meeting website is live.

The meeting will be held as a hybrid event from 17 to 22 September 2022 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. All participants must be pre-registered by 14 September to attend the meeting in person. The meeting schedule will be published on the ICANN website on 29 August.

EURid and ICANN Sign MoU Promoting Multilingualism and Inclusion on the Internet

EURid, the .eu registry, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ICANN to strengthen collaboration between the two organisations supporting Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs) and promoting the Universal Acceptance (UA) of all domain names and email addresses.

ICANN Heading to Hamburg (ICANN78) and Los Angeles (GDD) Plus Training For African Registries

ICANN’s meetings are starting to get back to normal with in-person attendances. In an announcement during the recent ICANN74 in The Hague, DENIC, eco and ICANN announced the ICANN78 annual general meeting will be held in Hamburg, Germany, in October 2023. And ICANN has scheduled the first Global Domains Division Summit since May 2020’s cancelled GDD Industry Summit in Paris for Los Angeles in November 2022.

CENTR Critical of EC’s Study on DNS Abuse

DNS Abuse has become an issue the domain name industry is beginning to give the attention it deserves. In February 2021 attention to it was ramped up when the Public Interest Registry, the team behind .org, launched the DNS Abuse Institute. Prior to this the issue was bubbling along being discussed regularly at ICANN meetings and elsewhere.

ICANN and the “Farcical” Waiver Requirements for ICANN74

The upcoming ICANN74 to be held both virtually and in-person in The Hague in June has some rather strange legalese when it comes to those attending regarding to COVID-19. There are some of the usual to be expected conditions such as to be vaccinated, wearing face masks and so on.
