VeriSign Increases Registry Fee for .COM and .NET Domains

VeriSign, the registry operator for .COM and .NET domain names announced this week that effective 1 July 2010 there will be an increase in registry domain name fees, effectively the wholesale price to registrars, for the Top Level Domains as per its agreements with ICANN.

Over the last decade, the volume of Internet traffic and domain name system (DNS) queries on VeriSign’s global infrastructure has increased from an average of approximately 2 billion queries per day in the year 2000 to more than 50 billion queries per day today while maintaining 100 percent operational accuracy and stability for the last eleven years.Over the next decade, VeriSign claims they will continue investment to build out the .COM and .NET infrastructures to manage the increasing demands on the infrastructure brought on by the proliferation of Internet-enabled phones and devices and the emergence of DNS-centric technologies and services. ICANN logoICANN is opening a 30 day public comment period on a proposed amendment from VeriSign to Appendix 7 of the dot-COM and dot-NET Registry Agreements.

On 29 July 2009, ICANN posted for public information a request submitted by VeriSign through the Registry Services Evaluation Process (RSEP) for Bulk Transfer After Partial Portfolio Acquisition (BTAPPA) in dot-COM and dot-NET. The VeriSign request is available at icann.org/registries/rsep/verisign-btappa-request-29jul09-en.pdf [PDF, 56K].

As provided for by existing consensus policy (icann.org/en/registries/rsep/rsep.html), ICANN performed a preliminary review to determine whether the proposal might raise significant security, stability, or competition issues. On 13 August 2009, ICANN notified VeriSign that the request was approved pending resolution of the necessary amendment.

The proposal requires an amendment to Appendix 7 of the dot-COM and dot-NET Registry Agreements. Pursuant to the RSEP and standard ICANN processes, this amendment is being posted for public comment. This is not intended for action during the ICANN meeting in Seoul, Korea. Verisign the registry for .tv, .net and .com have stated domain-name registrations rose 6 percent in the first quarter of 2008, continuing a trend of steady growth. 162 million domain name registrations across all of the top-level domains, or TLDs, VeriSign said Monday in its newest Domain Name Industry Brief. That’s a 26 percent increase over the same quarter of 2007.

VeriSign reported 71.4 million domain names registered at the end of 2004, and 105 million domain names registered by mid-2006.

The company processed a peak of more than 50 billion DNS (Domain Name System) queries per day in the first quarter of 2008, compared to an average of 30 billion DNS queries per day in the first quarter of 2007. Each query represents an Internet user accessing a Web site or sending e-mail.
