Number Of DNSSEC Signed .SE Domains Soars

The number of .SE domains that were signed using the DNSSEC security standard rose from 4,299 in early 2011 to 171,650 by 31 December, 2011. The number of .SE domains that were signed using the DNSSEC security standard rose from 4,299 in early 2011 to 171,650 by 31 December, 2011. The registry has attributed this to a considerable increase to a long-term strategy and a proactive initiative from .SE and several of its resellers (registrars) to enhance the security of the Internet in Sweden.

“I have a highly positive view of this trend. The more domains that are signed, the greater the trust users will have in online services. Security on the Internet has many ingredients, of which DNSSEC is a key component. This is a fact that every domain registrant should take into consideration. The next time you review your DNS system, you should include DNSSEC. These reviews should be conducted at regular intervals, perhaps every other year,” says Anne-Marie Eklund Löwinder, Head of Quality and Security at .SE.

.SE was the first top-level domain administrator in the world to implement DNSSEC, as early as 2005. As of 2007, all domain registrants were offered the option of securing their domain names using DNSSEC, although only a few registrants have utilized this opportunity. In December 2011, a campaign was thus conducted in partnership with .SE’s registrars to bolster the proliferation of DNSSEC in Sweden, and it has generated results.

“I would sincerely like to thank our registrars (resellers), who participated in this campaign. Together, we have made major advances in making the Internet more secure,” says Amar Andersson, Registrar Manager at .SE.

DNSSEC makes the Internet more secure by complicating the manipulation of the information that passes through the domain name system, ensuring users that they truly are visiting their Internet bank and not a facsimile that was set up to steal passwords and account information.
