Netfleet logoCustomers of Australian domain name reseller Netfleet may have had their personal details and encrypted credit cards compromised after hackers infiltrated the reseller’s database, CRN reported.

According to the report, Netfleet said hackers may have stolen customers’ name, email and street addresses, phone numbers and encrypted credit card numbers with expiry dates.

“Whilst we believe no sensitive data such as credit card information was accessed by the intruder, there is a possibility that this is indeed the case and as such we felt it our duty to inform you,” the company wrote in an email to customers today. “Since learning of the intrusion, we have taken the affected systems offline and are taking steps to address the vulnerability that led to this incident.”

“I would like to stress that we are erring on the side of caution and, there is no need to be unduly alarmed as it is in fact only a very remote possibility that your details have been accessed.”

The company is cooperating with the Australian Federal Police and the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) Australia and has now enhanced security on their website, resetting all client passwords and changed the login procedures.

.AU Record Domain Sale Confirmed

A new Australian domain name record was set today when InvestmentProperty.com.au was sold by Netfleet for A$125,001 +GST ($137,500).

A new Australian domain name record was set today when InvestmentProperty.com.au was sold by Netfleet for A$125,001 +GST ($137,500).

The sale of InvestmentProperty.com.au came about after it expired and by far exceeds the previous record for expired domains of $33,000 when one of Australia’s largest retailers, Woolworths, bought hardware.com.au after rival Bunnings, owned by Wesfarmers, accidentally let it expire late last year.

It also easily beats the official record for .AU domain sales which was poker.com.au which sold for $100,000 earlier this year. This was equalled when Deals.com.au also fetched $100,000 a few months later.

While not big compared to international sales this year where social.com, which sold for $2.6m, tops the Domain Name Journal year-to-date list of reported sales, it is significant given trading in domain names has only been in existence for a few years.

Including GST, the sale would come in at 26th place on Domain Name Journal’s list of year-to-date reported sales and the second-biggest ccTLD sale of the year behind aktien.de, which sold for €500,000 (US$725,000) and just ahead of beds.co.uk (£80,000 or US$130,400).

Hobart Up For Sale Down Under

Hobart.com.au is up for grabs through Netfleet in one of the most high profile domain name auctions in the two years since trading in .AU domain names was allowed

Hobart.com.au is up for grabs through Netfleet in one of the most high profile domain name auctions in the two years since trading in .AU domain names was allowed.

Since restrictions were lifted, the .AU domain name aftermarket has seen strong growth with nearly 10,000 domains changing hands every year. Recent sales at Netfleet include SexToys.com.au for $25,500 and WebsiteDesign.com.au for $22,000.

Netfleet expect Hobart.com.au to easily surpass these prices.

This is the first time a major city domain name has come up for sale since trading of .AU domain names has been allowed. The only other major Australian city domain names to have been auctioned recently have been Perth.com and Melbourne.com that sold for S$260K and A$900K respectively in 2007, although naturally .COM domain names attract a significant premium.

Any potential bidder should remember there are eligibility requirements for com.au domain names that, in short, require the registrant to have a “close and substantial connection” to the domain, which can include monetisation, and be able to trade as an Australian business. See www.auda.org.au/policies/auda-2008-05 for more information.
