Last April, Googler-in-Chief Eric Schmidt assured an audience at the Web 2.0 Expo that the issue fueling Viacom’s massive lawsuit against his company–alleged copyright infringement on YouTube–would become “moot” as soon as Google rolled out a new tool for managing content. On Monday, Google announced the arrival of that panacea, a new video filter designed to stem the massive flow of copyright-violating clips mixed into YouTube’s user generated content. Schmidt’s promise that the filter would sort out YouTube’s mounting legal problems, however, hasn’t materialized.
