Web worlds collide in war for followers

A phony war being waged between some of the biggest companies on the web broke out into the open this week.The worlds of internet search and social networking have finally collided – with long-term implications both for the experience of using the web, as well as the online competitive landscape. The opening salvo in the battle was fired on Wednesday, with news of an alliance between Facebook and Microsoft’s Bing search engine.For users who are signed on to Facebook when they carry out searches on Bing, Microsoft will return some results that include references to things on the web that their friends have expressed a preference for on the web by clicking on Facebook “like” buttons.To read this report in The Financial Times in full, see:
