Washington’s passion for Google cools

If it is true – as many believe – that the political elite in Washington have been engaged in a love affair with Google since Barack Obama’s campaign for the White House, then it is also true that the US president is now beginning to notice some wrinkles and warts on his beloved.

In response to the news reports about a secretly negotiated deal between Google and Verizon regarding Internet policy, CDT President Leslie Harris made the following statement:”The idea that a critical question of public policy could be privately negotiated between two industry giants turns the notion of Internet Neutrality on its head. The goal of Internet Neutrality is to prevent gatekeepers and ensure a level playing field. Any negotiation that begins and ends with two companies threatens to undercut that goal. Companies are free to make proposals. But at the end of the day, regulators and policymakers must make Internet policy decisions based on the public interest in ensuring that the Internet remains open innovative and free.”
