Viet Nam’s ccTLD has seen a surge in growth that saw it surge past the half million registrations mark in the first quarter of 2020 with total .vn domain names reaching 501,124 at the end of March, over half (289,556) of which were registered at the second level. This is an increase of 29,560 from the 471,564 from the end of March 2019 and an increase of 4,150 from the 496,974 at the end of December 2019.

.vn domain names are popular within the country, accounting for just under half (49%) of all domain names registered in Viet Nam according to VNNIC’s Report on Internet resources in 2019. Since 2011, VNNIC said .vn has ranked first in terms of the number of ccTLD domain names registered in ASEAN. They attribute the growth of .vn primarily to their efforts, in collaboration with .vn Registrars, continuously improving their quality of services and innovating their practices in operation, compliance and marketing over last 20 years since VNNIC was established to take the function of managing Internet resources in Viet Nam.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, VNNIC has seen a growth in digital business in Viet Nam with continuous growth for .vn. The first three months of 2020 saw a steady increase of more than 35,300 new registrations. The transfer market is also heating up with the number of domains transferred in March 2020 growing by double the number compared to January and February 2020.
