Verisign Launches General Availability For Japanese-Language .COM

Verisign logoThe General Availability for the Japanese-language version of .com, .コム, commenced on 13 June on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to availability and the applicable registry policies.

Verisign, the registry operator for .com, and the new generic Top Level Domains, the Japanese .com along with the Korean .net and .com, has high hopes in part given the high internet use by Japanese people.

According to Verisign, it is estimated that 95 percent of the population of Japan uses the internet every day. By enabling Japanese internet users to navigate the web in their native scripts, .コム gives individuals and companies the ability to connect with audiences in their preferred language. It also helps enable global brands to maintain a consistent brand identity.

In addition to helping maintain and promoting brand identity, Verisign note that a .コム domain name can yield other benefits. For example:

  • If you are planning to launch a product or marketing campaign in Japan, using a new .コム domain name for your landing page can help your campaign stand out.
  • Consider migrating existing content to a new .コム domain name, or redirecting your new .コム domain name to your existing site, to provide a way for Japanese internet users to navigate to your website in their native scripts.
  • In any of the above scenarios, core brand associations and taglines could also be registered as .コム domain names, and redirected as desired.
