Twitter halts ‘broken’ verified-profile system

Twitter has suspended its verified-profile scheme and described it as “broken”, following complaints over the type of accounts being verified.

Typically, prominent people, including musicians, journalists and company executives, get a blue icon on their profile after proving their identity.

However, some far-right and white-supremacist accounts have now also been verified.

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey said the scheme would now be “reconsidered”.

Twitter says its system is 'broken' after far-right organiser wins blue tick
Jack Dorsey, the chief executive of Twitter, has said its blue tick verification process is “broken” after it verified the organiser of a far-right rally.

The social media company was criticised after Jason Kessler, who organised the Unite the Right rally that sparked violence in the US town of Charlottesville in August, tweeted on Wednesday to confirm he had been verified by the platform.

Twitter Halts User Verification Process, Saying It's ‘Broken’
Twitter Inc. halted a system for verifying user identity, calling it “broken” after the process became seen as a stamp of approval for trolls, white supremacists and others disseminating hateful speech online.

In 2009, Twitter began placing a blue check mark on accounts of users whose identities had been verified — a way to help distinguish legitimate accounts from bogus ones. The social-media company drew criticism for the process this week after it verified the account of Jason Kessler, who is credited with orchestrating the white-supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August.

Twitter, Facing Another Uproar, Pauses Its Verification Process
On Tuesday afternoon, Twitter added a small blue check mark to the account of Jason Kessler, a move known as verification that indicates a prominent person’s real account.

The action was quickly met with outrage. That’s because Mr. Kessler is a well-known white supremacist who has used Twitter to spread his message and organize rallies like Unite the Right’s march in Charlottesville, Va., where torch-wielding protesters marched through the streets chanting racist rallying cries.
