TLD Updates: .ZUERICH Sunrise, Singapore Launches Search For New Businesses plus Singapore National Day Promotion, TLDCON 2021 Registration Opens, LACTLD Turns 23 and NamesCon Delayed To September

The Sunrise period for the new gTLD for Switzerland’s largest city and canton by population, Zürich, commences on 30 August, and will run until 29 October.

As part of the launch of .zuerich, a marketing campaign with the support of the Canton, the City of Zürich and the Zürich Tourism Association will run. The new gTLD will be the second in Switzerland to be managed by the federal government, the other being .swiss. Registrations will be limited to companies and organisations located in the Canton of Zurich.

During the Sunrise period owners of trademarks registered in the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) with a registration in the Commercial Register and administrative headquarters in the Canton of Zurich can pre-order .ZUERICH domains.

Alongside the Sunrise period, there will be a Limited Registration Period that will run from 30 September to 29 October. During this period public authorities with an administrative office in the Canton of Zurich can also pre-order .ZUERICH domains.

From 22 November .ZUERICH domains will be generally available for companies and public authorities operating in the Canton of Zurich and complying with allocation specifications.

Singapore has launched a new set of intellectual property resources to help enterprises get back on their feet following a year and a half of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The resources, announced by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law Mr Edwin Tong at the launch of the annual Intellectual Property Week (IP Week @ SG 2021) include Brand Search, a 4-in one search function on the Intellectual Property of Singapore (IPOS) GO mobile app. The enhanced search feature will help entrepreneurs and new business owners conduct a quick search for similar business names, trademarks, available domain names and social media usernames before deciding on a suitable name for their brand.

In celebration of Singapore’s National Day, the Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC) has made .SG domain names available at a special price for the month of August 2021. Until 31 August, all new domain names for the “.sg”, “.新加坡” and “.சிங்கப்பூர்” extensions under this promotion will be available at SGD$5.00 or lower for the first year through participating registrars.

Registration for TLDCON 2021, the 14th International Conference for ccTLD Registries and Registrars of CIS, Central and Eastern Europe, has opened. to be held on September 15-16, 2021. The conference is organised by the Coordination Center for TLD .RU/.РФ, with the support of the Technical Center of Internet and the Moscow Internet Exchange (MSK-IX).

The conference will offer online and offline, if the COVID-19 pandemic allows, events. The offline segment is currently scheduled to take place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

One virtual venue will bring together representatives of international organisations and national registries, famous Russian and foreign technical experts, and heads of ccTLD registries and registrar companies. The online format will make it possible to expand the audience and to engage new participants in discussing the development of the Russian and international domain industries. The Association of Latin American and the Caribbean ccTLDs (LACTLD) celebrated its 23rd birthday on 20 August. The organisation was formed in 1998 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, within the framework of the IFWP (International Forum on White Paper) meetings.

LACTLD works with the vision of promoting an Internet that contributes to economic and social development through the use of domain names, and with the mission of being an active agent in the Internet’s development and its governance through its participation and that of its members in the main spaces related to the Internet, domain names and digital presence.

COVID-19 has also led to NamesCon moving the date of NamesCon Global. The new dates are 22 to 24 September, which the organisers note “is the last chance for a while to connect w/ the #domaining community.”
