Crash In New gTLD Registrations Sees Total Domain Registrations Drop 2.8M In 12 Months: Verisign

Total domain name registrations around the world dropped 2.8 million in the year to 30 June, or 0.7%, to 367.3 million, according to Verisign’s latest Domain Name Industry Brief. But most noticeable was the crash in new gTLD registrations – a drop of 8.8 million to 22.9 million from 31.6 million, or 27.8% year over year.

The Sunrise period for the new gTLD for Switzerland’s largest city and canton by population, Zürich, commences on 30 August, and will run until 29 October.

TLD Roundup: SHOP Hits One Million, 3 More New gTLDs Terminated, New T&Cs For .RU and .РФ, CIRA Announces $1.25M in Grants and DNS Belgium Explains Cyber Security Coalition Involvement

The .shop new gTLD announced in mid-July it passed the one million registrations mark, one of only six new gTLD’s that has surpassed the milestone. Aimed at online businesses/ecommerce, it launched in late September 2016 and took 15 months to reach the half million milestone and just over 3.5 years to reach the million.

DENIC-Chef Jörg Schweiger spricht über DENIC, Sicherheit, neue TLDs, ICANN, DSGVO und die Zukunft der Domains

Im Januar gab Jörg Schweiger, von 2007 bis 2014 CTO und seit 2014 CEO der DENIC, bekannt, dass er im Dezember von seinem Amt zurücktritt. Das ist eine lange Zeit, und die Domainbranche hat sich sehr stark entwickelt. Wir haben Jörg Schweiger ein paar Fragen zu seiner Zeit bei der DENIC und den Veränderungen, die er erlebt hat, gestellt.

Jörg Schweiger ist einer dieser Menschen, die einen mit einem freundlichen Lächeln einnehmen, immer offen für den Dialog. Als wir ihm also ein paar Fragen stellten, antwortete er mit einigen aufschlussreichen Ansichten darüber, warum er der Meinung ist, dass die neuen TLDs eine große Chance verpasst haben, wie wichtig Sicherheit und Zuverlässigkeit für die DENIC ist und welche Herausforderungen die Datenschutzgrundverordnung (DSGVO oder GDPR) sowie die Zukunft der Domainnamen mit sich bringen. Jörg fragt sich sogar, ob ICANN angesichts des Kostendrucks, der anstehenden globalen Regulierungsinitiativen und der unterschiedlichen Ansichten in ihrer “breiten, vielschichtigen Community” weiterhin ihre (klar umrissene) Aufgabe erfüllen kann.

GoDaddy Registry Acquires Over 30 New gTLDs Including 28 From MMX

This week GoDaddy Registry announced it was expanding its registry services with the acquisition of more than 30 new generic top-level domains (new gTLDs), including 28 from Minds + Machines, .club and .design, plus the provision of registry services for .basketball and .rugby and Ally Financial’s branded .ally domain. The move will see the company add over 3 million domains under management to their portfolio, although GoDaddy Registry already provides registry services for .club’s 1.1 million domain names. Upon close of the acquisitions, it will see GoDaddy Registry own, manage or operate more than 240 top-level domains, with more than 14 million DUM.

Ethos Capital Acquires Majority Control of Donuts Inc.

Ethos Capital announced Thursday it has completed an investment to acquire a controlling interest of Donuts Inc. from Abry Partners. Based in Seattle, Washington, Donuts holds the world’s largest portfolio of top-level domains with 260 new gTLDs as well as providing registry services for a number of other top-level domains (both gTLDs and ccTLDs) through both its Donuts and Afilias brands.

Crash In New gTLD Registrations Sees Global Domain Registrations Drop 4.4M In Q4: Verisign DNIB

Total new gTLD registrations have been on a downhill slide since late September 2020 according to nTLDstats.com and the decline is continuing. Verisign’s authorative Domain Name Industry Brief released this week reports that in the final quarter of 2020, new gTLD domain name registrations dropped 4.2 million to 26.0 million which equates to a drop of 13.8% compared to the third quarter of 2020. Over the year new gTLDs decreased by 3.3 million or 11.2%.
