New gTLDs Stroll Past 1.5 Million Registrations With .XYZ Taking One In Five

ICANN new generic Top Level Domains logoThe 1,500,000th registration of a domain name under one of the new gTLDs happened in the last few days, probably last Friday, although exactly when is hard to pinpoint on newTLDstats.com daily update.

Currently total new gTLD registrations are showing at 1,517,747 with around one in five (301,627 – 19.87%) of these being .xyz registrations. Just on registrations, the second most successful new gTLD has been .berlin, which now has 136,943 domains under management, or 9.02 percent of all new gTLDs.

Both of these new gTLDs have had differing promotions that have been extremely successful at getting them initial registrations. Network Solutions has run a promotion for .xyz where their .com registrants received the equivalent .xyz domain for free, resulting in Network Solutions being responsible for 232,685 of the gTLD’s DUM, or over three-quarters (77.14%) of the total.

The .berlin gTLD ran a successful promotion itself with a limited number of registrars where the maximum fee charged per domains was €5.55, with some even giving away domains. After three days of the promotion, DUM had jumped almost 90,000.

According to the latest nTLDstats.com statistics, the third most popular of the new gTLDs is .club with 83,003 DUM, followed by .guru (65,137) and then .photography (40,603).

These are the only gTLDs with over 40,000 registrations. There are a total of 13 of the new gTLDs with over 20,000 registrations, 29 with more than 10,000, 62 with more than 5,000 and 137 with more than 1,000.

Overall there appears to be 152 of the new gTLDs that have entered General Availability and 322 that have been delegated. There are 28 registries responsible for the new gTLDs and 161 registrars that are accepting registrations for at least one of the new gTLDs with GoDaddy being the largest with 286,069 domains registered through it.

1.5 Million New gTLD Registrations Today

It’s probably already happened, but the 1,500,000th registration of a new gTLD domain name will happen today, 11 July.According to newTLDstats.com, there were 1,499,880 registrations, or domains under management, across all new gTLDs at their end of 10 July. The top new gTLDs according to DUM are .xyz with 290,811 and .berlin with 136,895. They are also the only two of the new gTLDs with more than 100,000- DUM. The .xyz gTLD somewhat controversially is in the lead due to a promotion with Network Solution where existing .com registrants were give the corresponding .xyz domain unless they specifically opted out of the promotion. Hence Network Solutions has 232,685 of .xyz’s DUM, or 80 percent market share. The .berlin meanwhile had a big boost to registrations in June when it ran a promotion with a limited number of registrars where the maximum fee charged per domains was 5.55, with some even giving away domains. After three days of the promotion, DUM had jumped almost 90,000.

Over 65,000 .BERLIN Registrations In One Day With Discounted Fee

DotBerlin logoThe .berlin gTLD started Monday 16 June with close to 50,000 registrations and ended the day with over 116,000 registrations, meaning there were a massive 65,000 or so registrations in 24 hours.

The massive number of registrations came about with a special promotion with participating registrars that saw the maximum fee charged of €5.55. Some registrars were reportedly giving the domains away for free.

It’s a marked contrast to the questionable activities of Network Solutions that gave their .com registrants the equivalent .xyz domain unless they explicitly opted out of the offer.

The special promotional campaign is running from 16 to 20 June five lucky registrants during the period will win an Apple iPad mini 32GB WIFI. Winners will be drawn on 27 June 2014.

The massive number of registrations pushed .berlin back into second place in the new gTLDs chart compiled by nTLDstats.com behind the controversial .xyz which has 145,868 registrations at the end of 16 June. Then .berlin (116,589), .club (72,023) and .guru (62,182). These are the only four gTLDs with more than 40,000 registrations. There are 11 gTLDs with more than 20,000 registrations, 25 with more than 10,000 and 115 with more than 1,000.

Getting noticed when there are so many gTLDs is going to prove more and more difficult when there are 302 gTLDs delegated and most of which will be after public registrations. Some have not begun Sunrise periods, let alone entered General Availability and there are hundreds more to come.

But the .berlin promotion has certainly boosted their registrations! And hopefully in a year or two when domains come up for renewal there will be plenty of .berlin websites floating around.

Register A Discounted .BERLIN Domain By 20 June To Win An iPad Mini

DotBERLIN banner imageThe new gTLD .berlin got off to a flying start and is ready to pass the 70,000 registrations mark any day, or hour, now. To celebrate dotBERLIN has announced a special promotional campaign where from 16 to 20 June, .berlin domains will cost a maximum of €5.55 at selected registrars.

In addition, five lucky registrants during the promotional period will win an Apple iPad mini 32GB WIFI. The winners will be drawn on 27 June 2014.

The promotion is already proving a success, as this morning European time there were around 50,000 registrations, but as of 14:00 CET, there were an extra 20,000 registrations meaning there are almost 70,000 registrations. [UPDATE: As of 16:00 CET there were 80,000 registrations!]

“We are very pleased with the development of registrations of .berlin domains so far and want to thank Berliners for that,” commented Dirk Krischenowski, founder and CEO of dotBERLIN. “Many attractive names are still available under .berlin, which enable a more intuitive communication of offerings for Berlin and Berliners.”

Many of the previously registered .berlin domains are already being used by their owners for their active online communication, such as the crowdfunding festival One Spark with onespark.berlin. In keeping with the ongoing World Cup, the World Cup Living Room (WM-Wohnzimmer) has been furnished in the stadium An der Alten Försterei and is being communicated throughout Berlin with large posters with the perfectly intuitive web address wm-wohnzimmer.berlin.

Overall .berlin sits fourth on the nTLDstats.com list of new gTLDs. The controversial allocation of .xyz domains by Network Solutions to their .com registrants has pushed registrations to 117,000. 99,000 of these “registrations” were allocated by Network Solutions, meaning it is possible there are less than 20,000 genuine registrations.

Second is now .berlin with 80,000 registrations, then .club with 71,500 registrations and then .guru with 62,000 registrations. Overall there are 1.1 million registrations across the 302 new gTLDs that have been delegated.

New gTLD Registrations Pass One Million Mark In Dodgy Circumstances

The number of new gTLDs Domains Under Management passed the one million milestone on 6 June, but the boost it received from a .xyz “promotion” run by Network Solutions has led to accusations the registrar has artificially inflated the number of registrations. As of 9 June, there were 1,023,297 DUM across the 300 new gTLDs with at least one domain name shared out among 136 registrars and 39 registries. With the Network Solutions promotion, .xyz has leapt into the lead with 88,747 registrations, almost 20,000 ahead of .club with 68,781 and then .guru with 61,958. Following is .berlin with 49,195. These are the only new gTLDs with more than 40,000 registrations. There are another four new gTLDs with registrations over 30,000, three more with 20,000+ and six more with 10,000+. In total there are 55 new gTLDs with more than 1,000 registrations. But it the method Network Solutions has adopted to boost .xyz registrations has attracted controversy with accusations of “clear-cut cases of cybersquatting” by Domain Incite.Network Solutions has been giving away tens of thousands of .xyz domain names to the registrants of the matching .com domain.Domain Incite found many instances of domains being registered that included trademarks in the domains such as my-twitter.xyz, facebook-liker.xyz, googledia.xyz, arolexwatches.xyz, disneytime.xyz, iphonethank.xyz, sellstuffonamazon.xyz and pepsicontest.xyz.”They’re all registered via NetSol’s Whois privacy service, which lists the registrant’s ‘real’ name in the Whois record, but substitutes mailing address, email and phone number with NetSol-operated proxies.””The ‘registrants’ did not have to explicitly accept the offer,” Domain Incite reported. “Instead, NetSol gave them the option to ‘opt-out’ of having the name registered on their behalf and placed into their accounts.”For more detail on the .xyz controversy, see the Domain Incite report here.

New gTLD registrations have leapt passed the 900,000 mark and as of 3 June there were 936,597 across all new gTLDs according to nTLDstats.com. Registrations passed the 900,000 mark on 2 June.Registrations were boosted significantly with the launch of .xyz’s General Availability on 3 June. Before GA commenced there were 14,378 registrations, but by the end of day one there were 34,029, meaning 19,651 registrations for the day, and .xyz was fifth on the nTLDstats.com list of top gTLDs by registrations. It currently sits in fourth place. It wasn’t the gTLD with the most registrations on day one of GA though – that honour still goes to .club with 26,832 registrations. As of 3 June the top gTLDs were .club with 65,782 registrations followed by .guru (61,397), .berlin (49,007), .photography (37,620) and then .xyz.There are now 11 of the new gTLDs with more than 20,000 registrations, 24 with more than 10,000, 53 with more than 5,000 and 98 with more than 1,000.In total there are 289 gTLDs that have been delegated, 134 registrars taking registrations and 38 registries.

.CLUB Now Number One New gTLD And Poised To Crack 60,000 Registrations

The .club gTLD passed .guru in the battle of the new gTLDs with the most registrations to become number one yesterday (26 May). At the end of the day, there were 59,400 .club registrations and 59,280 registrations according to nTLDstats.com.The rise of .club hasn’t quite met the expectations of the registry who predicted the gTLD would be the largest within a week of General Availability commencing, but they did make it within three weeks. And while registrations for all new gTLDs taper off following the first day of General Availability, .guru has managed to maintain over 1,000 registrations per day last week (during its third week with 8,741) compared to .guru with not quite 200 registrations per day, or 1,386 for the week. They are the only two of the new gTLDs to have launched with more than 50,000 registrations and .club should crack 60,000 today. Back in a now lonely third place is .berlin with 48,163. Following is another four gTLDs with more than 30,000 registrations – .photography (36,539), .在线 (Chinese for “online” – 31,556), .link (31,513) and .email (31,023). Rounding out the top ten are .today (25,306), .tips (22,976) and .company (19,804).In total there are 835,037 registrations across the 275 gTLDs that have been delegated with 130 registrars that take registrations for at least one gTLD and 37 registries. Now there are 22 gTLDs with more than 10,000 registrations, 45 with more than 5,000 and 90 with more than 1,000.

800,000 New gTLD Registrations As .CLUB Moves Into Second

The number of domain names registered across all new gTLDs passed 800,000 on 22 May, according to nTLDstats.com with the .club gTLD moving into second position. The latest nTLDstats.com figures show there are 807,769 domains across the 272 gTLDs that have been delegated, with 129 registrars taking registrations. The top gTLD remains .guru with 58,271 registrations, but .club is now second with 51,530 and .berlin third with 48,035. Chinese gTLDs Pushes New gTLD Registrations Beyond 600,000

The commencement of General Availability for two Chinese language new gTLDs saw total registrations across all new gTLDs to jump to 634,450 on 28 April. The two Chinese language gTLDs, .xn--3ds443g (在线) and .xn--fiq228c5hs (中文网), had registration figures of 29,722 and 14,216 respectively at the end of the day, pushing them to fourth and tenth on the nTLDstats.com list of top new gTLDs. Interestingly, it was the Chinese government’s Service Development Center of the State Commission for Public Sector Reform that had by far the most registrations for each gTLD with 98.6 and 71.2 percent of all domains registered respectively.According to DomainNameWire, about 20,000 of these registrations came from a deal TLD Registry struck with the above Chinese government department.Overall .guru is still, for now, the leading new gTLD with 52,927 registrations and now a 8.34 percent market share, followed by .berlin (46,914) and .photography (33,771).

.SAARLAND Gets Set To Launch… A Little Differently

dot SAARLAND logoAnother geographical gTLD is set to launch in the coming months with a slightly different Landrush period. Some gTLDs are open to everyone (.berlin) or everyone after preferences are given to businesses and individuals in the Landrush (.london) while others are restricted to businesses and individuals within the city (.nyc).

But .saarland, the gTLD for the Saarland region in south west Germany, has done things a little different. First is the typical Sunrise period (17 July to 15 September) that will include Sunrise A for those registered with the Trademark Clearinghouse and Sunrise B for officially registered companies, associations and statutory corporations in Saarland. Starting at the same time, but for a shorter period, will be a Founders Programme (17 July to 16 August) where businesses and individuals with innovative ideas can apply for their preferred domain. More details are to come but the idea is that the registry operator wants registrants to think a little differently on how they use their .saarland domain. The applications for domain names will be judged by an independent panel chosen by the dotSaarland e.V.

Following the Founders Programme is the Landrush (23 September to 22 October) that allows priority registrations for individuals and legal entities that have no brand, but still want an early, preferred access to a particular domain. During the Landrush applications from the Saarland are favoured in order to further promote the regional character of the TLD. The Landrush will be created as an application process and not carried out according to the “first come, first served” principle: In case of multiple, valid applications for the same domain name, there will be a closed auction between the applicants.

Then from 30 October will be the General Availability on 30 October where .saarland domains will become available for registration by all interested parties in accordance with the “first come, first served” principle. Non-binding and free for pre-orders for .SAARLAND domains can already be submitted with several registrars.

All .SAARLAND registration applications in the Sunrise, Landrush and General Availability must be submitted through an .SAARLAND accredited registrar. Applications for registrations in the Founders Program will be submitted directly to the dotSaarland GmbH.
