ICANN: Generation Panel for the Armenian Script ‭Root Zone‬ Label Generation Rules Seated‬‬‬‬

ICANN logoICANN is pleased to announce that the Generation Panel for the Armenian Script Root Zone Label Generation Rules (LGR) has been seated.

Following the Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules published on 11 July 2013, the Armenian script community has developed and submitted to ICANN, on 27 January 2015, the Proposal for the Generation Panel for the Armenian Script Label Generation Ruleset for the Root Zone. ICANN staff has reviewed the proposal including panel composition and scope, to ensure that requirements set forth in the LGR Procedure, and in particular the criteria set forth in the Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules, are fulfilled.

On behalf of ICANN, we would like to use this opportunity to thank each of the members for offering their time and expertise to volunteer for the Armenian Script Generation Panel.

With composition and work plan approved, the Armenian Script Generation Panel will start its work on the label generation rules. According to the LGR Procedure, the starting point of any Generation Panel’s work is the Maximal Starting Repertoire (MSR), with it’s first version (MSR-1) released on 20 June 2014 and the second version (MSR-2) currently under community review. The full specification of Generation Panel’s tasks can be found in the LGR Procedure in particular, Section B.3 “Variant Rule Generation Procedure”.

ICANN will provide a central public location workspace on the project website, where Armenian Script Generation Panel proposal, composition, work plan updates, public reports, contact details, and any other relevant information will be included.

As a reminder, and to highlight the importance of script community involvement required in the development of the IDN Root Zone LGR, we would like to reiterate the Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules. A successful development of the IDN Root Zone LGR depends on having Generation Panels for each script represented in the Root Zone. In the IDN Root Zone LGR development, in addition to ongoing efforts with the Arabic, Armenian and Chinese scripts, Generation Panel formation is expected to cover other scripts including Bengali, Cyrillic, Devanagari, Ethiopic, Georgian, Greek, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Hebrew, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Lao, Latin, Myanmar, Oriya, Sinhala, Tamil, Telugu, Thai and Tibetan.

For further information on how to form a Generation Panel or to express individual or group statements of interest for the establishment of a Generation Panel, please refer to the Call for Generation Panels to Develop Root Zone Label Generation Rules and to the additional supporting documentation provided on the Root Zone LGR Project website.

ICANN: IDN ccTLD Request from Armenia Successfully Passes String Evaluation

ICANN logoICANN is pleased to announce the successful completion of String Evaluation on proposed IDN ccTLD string for Armenia.

Details of the successful evaluation are provided here: www.icann.org/en/resources/idn/fast-track/string-evaluation-completion

The IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) ccTLD Fast Track Process was approved by the ICANN Board at its annual meeting in Seoul, South Korea on 30 October 2009. First requests were received starting 16 November 2009. The process enables countries and territories to submit requests to ICANN for IDN ccTLDs, representing their respective country or territory names in scripts other than Latin. IDN ccTLD requesters must fulfill a number of requirements:

  • the script used to represent the IDN ccTLDs must be non-Latin;
  • the languages used to express the IDN ccTLDs must be official in the corresponding country or territory; and
  • a specific set of technical requirements must be met (as evaluated by an external DNS Stability Panel comprised of DNS and IDN experts).

The request and evaluation processes entail three steps:

  • Preparation (by the requester in the country / territory): Community consensus is built for which IDN ccTLD to apply for, how it is run, and which organization will be running it, along with preparing and gathering all the required supporting documentation. Requests are submitted through an online system together with additional material supporting the process at forms.icann.org/idn/apply.php
  • String Evaluation: Requests are evaluated in accordance with the technical and linguistic requirements for the IDN ccTLD string(s) criteria described above.
  • String Delegation: Requests successfully meeting string evaluation criteria are eligible to apply for delegation following the same ICANN IANA process as is used for ASCII based ccTLDs. Requesters submit string delegation requests to IANA root zone management: root-mgmt@iana.org.

With this announcement, a total of 35 countries/territories requests have successfully passed through the String Evaluation. Of these, 28 countries/territories (represented by 38 IDN ccTLDs) are delegated in the DNS root zone; with the remainder either readying to apply, or actively applying for, delegation of the string. Up-to-date numbers about the IDN Fast Track Program will continue to be provided on the Fast Track Process web page at https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/fast-track-2012-02-25-en.

ICANN looks forward to enabling the availability of non-Latin country-code domains for countries that meet the Fast Track Process requirements. ICANN will continue to accept new string evaluation requests in the Fast Track Process. Staff support is available to help all countries and territories interested in participating in the Fast Track Process. Please email idncctldrequest@icann.org for any inquiries for participation.
