The internet needs a way to help people separate rumour from real science, says the creator of the World Wide Web.Talking to BBC News Sir Tim Berners-Lee said he was increasingly worried about the way the web has been used to spread disinformation.Sir Tim was speaking in advance of an announcement about a Foundation he has helped create that will vet websites.The Foundation will certify sites that it has found to be trustworthy and a reliable source of information.

Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, will launch a new foundation focused on extending the capabilities of the Web and bringing the Internet to all the world’s people, he announced Sunday.The World Wide Web Foundation, scheduled to launch early next year, will “advance a Web which is open and free,” Berners-Lee said at a Washington, D.C., event. The foundation will promote democracy, free speech and the freedom of Internet users to access the online content they want, he said.
