It’s the secret industry consultation paper the federal government doesn’t want you to see.Distributed to telecommunications industry members last Friday, the nine-page document – which Fairfax Media has chosen to publish for public debate – attempts to clarify what sorts of customer web and phone “metadata” the government wants companies such as Telstra, Optus and iiNet to store for up to two years under a “data retention” regime.On Tuesday, online rights group Electronic Frontiers Australia and internet and phone provider iiNet both said it should be released publicly.
