A total of 42% of households in the EU now have a broadband connection, according to an official survey by the national statistics offices across Europe. That represents a 12 percentage point rise on the figure for 2006.The survey, carried out by national statistics offices across Europe, also appears to confirm a gender gap in use of the internet as people become older.Almost one-third of men over the age of 55 use the internet at least once a week while the figure for women is less than one-fifth.
