Recently changes were announced for the registration of .MX domain names enabling registration at the second level. As of September 1, 2009, all that are eligible to register a .MX domain name will be entitled to register .MX domains at the second level.
Below is a summary of the three stages that will to register .MX directly. The stages are:
- Pre-Registration
- Waiting Period
- Initial Period of Registration
Pre-Registration Phase:
The Pre-Registration period will commence on May 1, 2009 and last until July 31. Registrants with domain names already registered before May 1 will be blocked so that they are not able to be transferred or deleted during this period. At this stage ONLY those who have registered a âDomain of Originâ can request a .MX domain.
A âDomain of Originâ is any domain registered before March 1st 2009 under any of the following extensions: COM.MX, .NET.MX, .ORG.MX, .EDU.MX, or .GOB.MX.
Registrant information for the .MX domain must be the same as the âdomain of originâ. Registrants of .MX domains are only able to request the exact same domain as the âDomain of Originâ.
If there are more than one request for a domain at the second level, preference will be given to the registrant who has registered the âDomain of Originâ first.
A domain name that is already registered cannot be requested, when a domain name is reserved or when the âDomain of Originâ is in Transfer Process.
Registrations during this phase will be for one year and cost US$35.
Waiting Period Phase:
From August 1 to 31, 2009 will be the Waiting Period phase where no new request will be received and only the pending requests will be processed. It will be possible to check requests from the first stage at www.whois.mx.
For registrants who have attempted to register a domain name during the Pre-Registration phase, if they are not satisfied with how the domain name was assigned during this period there will be the opportunity to initiate a claim.
At the end of this period, the domains assigned under .MX will be activated. Also at this time, the domain names blocked from being transferred or deleted will unblocked for these registrations before March 1 2009.
Initial Period of Registration:
From: September 1 to October 31 2009 any person eligible person or organisation interested will be able to request a domain name. A âfirst come, first servedâ basis will apply and the registration period will be for one year.
There will be a special list of prices, starting with the highest price and decreasing gradually. Charges will apply immediately. There will be reserved list of domains, for example domains related to ICANN, IANA, etc.
No domains with 1 or 2 characters will be allowed with exception of those that were registered before May 1st 2009.
