“The highest price ever paid for a .co.uk internet domain name has been recorded after ‘recycle.co.uk’ went under the hammer for ã150,000 (US$317,000)” according to a report in the Financial Times, breaking the record of ã110,000 paid by J Sainsbury for taste.co.uk in 1997.
“The domain name was bought by ASAP Ventures, a venture capital company, which plans to use the name to launch a company providing UK consumers with information on recycling” according to the FT.
The FT notes the high price reflects high valuations with eco-friendly businesses. The sale of recycle.co.uk was handled by Sedo who also sold mobile.co.uk for ã120,000. The FT also notes “There is a growing interest in buying generic internet names such as these in the UK” with a shortage of memorable names.
