The US presidential elections and a bumper celebrity news month, with the death of Heath Ledger and Britney Spears’ ongoing problems, produced record traffic for the UK’s newspaper websites during January.Mail Online saw unique user numbers rocket 164% year on year to 17,903,172 last month, the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic figures published today reveal.Guardian.co.uk, which remains the most popular UK newspaper website, and Times Online, also put in strong performances last month, up 25.5% and 38% respectively compared with January 2007.
