Record-breaking Year for .PL

NASK logo2008 was a superb year for the .pl ccTLD, says NASK, the .pl registry in a report reviewing the year. For the year, domain name registrations grew by 73.5 per cent to 1.3 million domains, making .pl the fifth largest ccTLD in Europe and tenth largest worldwide.

Not only have registrations skyrocketed, the registration of domain names per capita is also very high. Registrations of .pl domain names per person is significantly higher than in a number of developed western countries such as Japan, South Korea, France and Spain.

According toAndrzej Bartosiewicz, the Head of the NASK Internet Domains Division, if a rapid growth continues of around nine per cent, it can be expected there will be as many as 1,850,000 domains registered by the end of 2009 with the two million mark being passed sometime in 2010. The one million mark was passed in May 2008.

There have been a number of factors contributing to the high growth rate in .pl registrations including:

  • the introduction and implementation of a fully automated domain registration system
  • cooperation with over one hundred registrars and resellers (partners) dealing with the domain management and registration
  • the launch of new services, such as wait list service (known as domain option in the Polish version), or domain tasting (in the Polish language version known as domain name tasting) and the possibility to register domains that include the national diacritics (IDN).

More information on .pl domain names is available from the NASK website at (in Polish and English).
