A study of global news consumers suggests that people would be prepared to pay for what they read online.But the research also shows that people are not prepared to pay much for their news – and that Australians are the cheapest of them all.

Almost half of Australian internet users would be willing to pay a small monthly amount for unique and timely online news, according to a survey by the Boston Consulting Group.The survey of 5083 people in nine countries found that media firms could partly offset falling advertising revenues by charging an average $US5 a month for particular types of news.
