Police have dismantled a large child exploitation website seizing more than 307,000 images of children from around the world.Twenty one people from Queensland, including one juvenile who was dealt with under the Youth Justice Act, have been charged following the closure of Operation Gatekeeper, which targeted an online website displaying child exploitation material. The internationally hosted website, which was split up into a number of categories, allowed the posting of child exploitation images and facilitated the request of similar images and comments in their content. In January last year, Detectives from the State Crime Operations Command Taskforce Argos executed a search warrant on the website administrator and operator. The 23-year-old Helensvale man was charged with possessing child exploitation material and using a carriage service for child pornography material. He is scheduled to appear in the Brisbane District Court on June 3, 2011.As a result of the information gained during the warrant execution, Taskforce Argos assumed control of the site and prevented any further access to it. Detectives working on the operation then targeted offenders who used the internet to post and trade child exploitation material. The website contained more than 88,000 different posts, with 44,000 different images contained on the site at the time police intervened. More than 21,000 internet addresses from 100 countries provided images to the site, with almost 1,000 being Australian based internet addresses.Child Safety Director, Detective Superintendent Cameron Harsley said the most telling success of the operation was that it has led to the identification and removal of 29 child victims from further sexual exploitation, including one from Queensland.”Accessing and downloading Child Exploitation Material creates a market for the abuse of children. The internet is not something that offenders can continue to hide behind. Globally and locally, we have the ability to track down offenders, identify their activities, what they are accessing and prosecute. The internet may give some people a false sense of security, but we will find you.”Taskforce Argos is committed to removing children from harm and works co-operatively with other law enforcement agencies around the world to continue to dismantle websites exploiting children and bring these offenders to justice,” Detective Superintendent Harsley said.Operation Gatekeeper represents not just the identification of people accessing and posting child exploitation material but the dismantling of a website set up to facilitate the trading of child exploitation material. Worldwide children were identified and removed from harm in five different countries, including Russia and Mexico. The Queensland Police Service also acknowledges the assistance from other police jurisdictions, including the Australian Federal Police.Charges include:A 21-year-old man from Caboolture charged with possess child exploitation material, use carriage service to access child exploitation material.
