In Canada there are moves afoot to introduce a .qc TLD after a Parti Québécois member of the Canadian national assembly has made moves to get support for the Quebec identity online.
Daniel Turp has started a petition to convince the ICANN, the international authority responsible for Internet domain names, to create an extension that would be unique to websites in Quebec reports a Canadian Press report.
Mr. Turp says one way to identify a nation is for it to have its own web extensions and that if his efforts are successful, Quebeckers would use the extension .qc. Turp is sure he can convince ICANN of the merits of .qc. “I’m sure I can convince ICANN or other bodies,” he said.
However as is pointed out by ICANNâs Jason Keenan, there is a lot more to obtaining a TLD then petitioning ICANN.
It seems Turp needs to do a little more homework.
