Porn Industry Still Not Happy With .XXX

The porn industry is still railing against the likely introduction of the .XXX Top Level Domain with Violet Blue writing on the Carnal Nation blog she describes ICM Registry as “the professional URL grafters” with no support from the porn industry.Blue writes that “Porn companies practically held up big signs that said “DO NOT WANT.” And that there was no or at least negligible support from the porn industry. In her article, Blue gives a background to .XXX going back “to the first time .XXX was proposed to ICANN … was by Canadian real estate developer Jason Hendeles in October 2000.””Where once they were allies, Lawley called porn company critics the equivalent of ‘they just jealous’ and suggested lack of support was due to pornographers wishing they’d thought of it first. At no point did anyone raise the looming specter of how higher purpose for .xxx had been left at the station after the last train. Or how the promised policing of .xxx’s adult clean space (no malware, etc.) raised fascinating implementation questions. Questions as to why porn companies would willingly give up prime .com real estate for a voluntary online ghetto went unanswered. Perhaps a real estate developer might know why someone might want to move their business from downtown San Francisco to the astonishingly more expensive outskirts of Bakersfield?”Blue then concludes “In the end, .xxx may not matter much for anyone in Western porn cultures. Although the one thing .xxx detractors seem to be able to agree on is that making a porn TLD won’t do anything to solve problems surrounding pornography.”What .xxx will matter for, however, is the problematic bigger questions around spurious and unsupported TLD’s in regard to the impact of ICANN rulings on civil and human rights, and ICANN’s role in content-based discrimination. These are questions that should have been asked long before .aero puffed out of ICANN’s pipe and out into nowhere.”To read this article by Violet Blue in Carnal Nation in full, see:
