The Nigerian Government has assumed management and control of the .NG ccTLD with a change of severs to .NG and the approval of the board re-delegation of the Nigerian ccTLD on the IANA website by the global Internet regulation body ICANN/IANA, reports Lagosâ Daily Independent.
The local management and control now resides with the Nigerian Internet Registration Association (NIRA), the report continues, after years of negotiations, meetings and discussions.
A statement by the president of the NIRA, Ndukwe Kalu said the change of management was effected exactly by 4 pm May 13, 2009 by Verisign who made the ICCAN approved root server changes to the .ng ccTLD.
“The redelgation makes NIRA the sponsoring organization and manager of the .nccTLD bring the .ng as desired to the greater participation of all stakeholders both government and private sector”, Ndukwe said.
In another report from Computerworld Kenya, it says âthe battle for control of the .ng domain started in 1995, with the appointment of Ibukun Odusote as administrative contact. By 2004, the debate was so heated that it required the intervention of Nigerian President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.â
With a population of more than 150 million, Nigeria is hoping to rank in the top 10 countries in terms of TLD registration.
