NIC Argentina Tells Domainers – No More

nic.ar Argentina logoDomain name holders in the .AR ccTLD will no longer be able to have more than 200 domain names, a move that appears aimed at domainers. The change in policy to limit the number of domain registrations sees each entity limited to a maximum of 200 COM.AR or ORG.AR domain names.

The changes come about because of what NIC Argentina call abuses of .AR domain registrations. The decision has been based on the following reasons:

  • article 1.071 from the Argentinean Civil Code, which says “the law does not protect the abusive exercise of the rights. This considers those who exceed the limits impose by the good faith, moral and good behaviour”
  • with a growing internet community in Argentina, NIC Argentina has determined they are having difficulties in finding suitable domain names due to a number of entities with large numbers or domain names
  • 25 per cent of the total number of domain names registered have been requested by 0.17 per cent of the entities registered in NIC Argentina.

For those who have registered more than 200 domain names, they will:

  • not be able to register any new domain names
  • not be able to receive transfers from third parties
  • only be able to renew up to TWO HUNDRED (200) of their registered domains.

Any individual or organisation who feels they need to register more than the limit of 200 domain names, must send a letter to NIC Argentina for each new domain, which should state the necessity of the additional domain name over the establish limit and declaring their legitimate interest in the domain name.
