Megaupload’s short-lived effort to go legit

Before the feds shut down Megaupload, the file-sharing site accused of criminal copyright infringement, operators of the company were in talks with French technology firm UbicMedia about converting online pirates into legitimate buyers and sellers. There’s no guarantee that the Hollywood studios, record labels and other copyright holders would have supported the effort. In fact, history suggests otherwise. Nevertheless, I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if Megaupload had moved sooner to incorporate UbicMedia’s security and e-commerce technology.
