Investigations soar, but Australian regulator is powerless to act on online gambling

The number of investigations into illegal gambling websites has ballooned in the past five years, yet no charges have been laid against a site administrator.While the vast majority of sites were hosted overseas, which meant regulators had little power to prosecute, the dramatic rise calls into question the efficacy of the existing regulation.The number of investigations initiated by the Australian Media and Communications Authority (ACMA) has jumped from eight in the 2006-07 financial year to 57 in the last financial year, of which 38 revealed prohibited gambling material.
