Information and communication technologies (ICT) — essential for creating new skills and generating growth and technological change — are critical for Africa’s overall economic development. ICT products are themselves part of the higher-value, high-tech products that are growing fastest in international trade and that can sustain faster growth of incomes. They are both enablers of competitiveness and a key sector in their own right.African operators are forging ahead with deployment of next-generation technologies in the continent, including third-generation (3G) telephony, broadband Internet, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
