A group of German hackers has launched a software tool to help journalists visiting the Olympic games bypass internet restrictions put in place by the Chinese authorities. The Chaos Computer Club [ccc.de], an ethical hacking organisation, has developed the Freedom Stick, a USB memory stick containing a special “toolkit” that will enable users to get uncensored access to the web.The software works by disguising the address of the site that a person plans to visit, as well as their physical location. The toolkit relies on a network of computers to anonymously relay traffic between machines, scrambling and disguising the necessary identifying data and then pinging it across a series of ‘bridges’ and ‘nodes’.
