Google Announces .DEV Sunrise to Commence 16 January

During the Chrome Dev Summit keynote Monday, Google announced the launch dates for their .dev new gTLD, a secure domain they’re aiming at developers and technology. Google is billing it as the ideal domain name that’s suitable for everything from tools to platforms and programming languages to blogs.

.dev is included on the HSTS preload list, making HTTPS required on all connections to .dev websites and pages without needing individual HSTS registration or configuration. Security is built in. It will be the sixth new gTLD to be launched by Google, the others being .app, .page, .how, .soy and .みんな.

The largest of Google’s new generic top level domains to launch by registration numbers, or domain names under management, is .app with 335,000 registrations followed by .page (7,000), .how (2,200), .soy (1,400) and .みんな (Japanese for “everyone” with 1,200 registrations). Overall 46 new gTLDs have been delegated to Google, most of which will never be open for public registrations including .google and .youtube.

Another of Google’s domains coming up for public registration in 2019 is .new which will support G Suite in an innovative use for new actions in Docs, Sheets, Slides and more. .new will be open, secure by default, and will be available to everyone for registration in 2019.

For .dev, a Sunrise period where trademark holders who have submitted their trademark to the Trademark Clearinghouse can register .dev domains will run from 16 January to 19 February 2019.

This will be followed by an Early Access period where anyone can register available .dev domains for an extra fee, which decreases leading up to General Availability. This will run from 19 to 28 February.

And then from 28 February onwards General Availability will commence, where anyone can register available .dev domains.

There will also be a claims period that will run indefinitely for the new generic top level domain, during which trademark owners will receive notification when their marks are registered as domains. Visit for more details.
