Germany plans news cyber-warfare defence centre

Germany will create a new cyber-warfare defence centre next year to fight off espionage attacks, the German interior ministry said.”We plan to create a so-called ‘National Cyber-Defence Centre’ in 2011,” a spokesman told reporters on Monday. “It will work by bundling existing know-how in the area of cyber defence.”

The number of cyber attacks in Germany and abroad has skyrocketed in recent years, costing the economy upwards of 10 billion euros annually. In response, the government in Berlin is planning to create an agency dedicated to documenting and stopping such high-tech assaults.It was one of the few of its kind to hit the big time. In November, the famous computer virus Stuxnet found its way into the uranium enrichment facility near the Iranian city of Natanz and proceeded to wreak havoc on a significant number of the some 10,000 centrifuges on site. Indeed, a recent report indicates that as many as 10 percent of the machines may have been destroyed, potentially setting back Iran’s nuclear program by up to two years.

Germany detected a sharp rise in cyberattacks in 2010, many originating in China, and plans to set up a special centre next year to deal with the danger, the government said on Monday.”There has been a sharp rise in so-called electronic attacks on the networks of German government and local authorities,” interior ministry spokesman Stefan Paris told a regular government briefing.
