.FR Share Of French Domains Continues To Grow

AFNIC logoThe number of .fr domain names registered within France has grown by 10.7 percent in the period from 2007 to 2013 the latest Afnic report of the French Domain Name Industry, while registrations of .com and other TLDs have declined 5.4 and 5.3 percent respectively.

The report points out that over one in three (36.3%) domain names registered in France today are .fr domains, up from one in four (25.6%) in 2007. During the same period the share of .com domains dropped from 48.6 to 43.2 percent.

The change has followed changes to registration requirements in 2006 when individuals were allowed to register .fr domain names, which was the third phase in the opening up of .fr. From 1998 to 2004, the domain registration market in France was beginning, while the second phase, from 2004 to 2006 saw the dropping of the requirement where companies had to substantiate their right to a domain name.
