Facebook Begins Testing Direct Publication of News Articles

Facebook’s long-rumored plan to directly host articles from news organizations will start on Wednesday, concluding months of delicate negotiations between the Internet giant and publishers that covet its huge audience but fear its growing power.Nine media companies, including NBC News and The New York Times, have agreed to the deal, despite concerns that their participation could eventually undermine their own businesses.

Facebook will host articles from nine media organizations on its mobile app starting Wednesday as part of an experiment that offers attractive terms for publishers, but also risks deepening their reliance on the social network for traffic.The New York Times, National Geographic, BuzzFeed, NBC, The Atlantic, The Guardian, BBC News, Spiegel and Bild are Facebook’s initial partners in the program, dubbed Instant Articles. Talks between Facebook and publishers began last year with some, including The Wall Street Journal, adopting a more cautious approach.
