Europe’s privacy watchdogs have issued a rebuke to Facebook, telling the social networking site that changes it made to the site’s privacy settings late last year were ‘unacceptable’.Facebook faced criticism over the changes when they were made last December, and more when it announced recently that it would allow business partners to make more use of members’ data.

European data protection advisers have said it was ‘unacceptable’ for Facebook to make some of its users’ data public without their permission at the end of last year.In a Wednesday letter to the company, the Article 29 Data Protection Working Party said social networks needed to have a default setting in which access to profile information and information about users’ connections were “limited to self-selected contacts”. The working party advises the European Commission on data protection issues.

EU privacy regulators have joined a growing chorus of watchdogs that are worried by changes to the privacy settings of popular social networking site Facebook.”It is unacceptable that the company fundamentally changed the default settings on its social networking platform to the detriment of a user,” the Article 29 Working Party, a group of EU privacy regulators, warned in a letter sent to Facebook on Wednesday (12 May).
