The .EU TLD celebrated its tenth birthday this week. After ten years of availability there are now 3.9 million .eu domain names registered through 750 partners worldwide â .eu accredited registrars.
Of the 3.9 million registrations, 1.073 million are registered in Germany followed by the Netherlands (496,000), France (337,000), Poland (321,000) and then the UK (312,000). And of the total registrations, the number of internationalised domain names is around 45,750.
The anniversary, celebrated on 7 April, has seen ten years of EURid greatly developing .eu, offering the TLD to residents of the EU and EEA as well as implementing solutions in order to create a safe, stable and credible European online extension.
Looking to the near future, the start of June will see the launch of the .eu Cyrillic TLD: an important milestone for non-Latin scripts, further helping online multilingualism in Europe.
âI am pleased to see that more and more users are choosing the .eu domain, which connects more than 500 million people to one internet identity, across the 28 countries of the European Union as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway,â wrote Andrus Ansip, European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Single Market.
To celebrate this milestone, EURid will be launching a brand new website as well as releasing a special anniversary edition of their online magazine, .eu illustrated . The unique issue includes exclusive interviews with the vice president of the European Commission, Mr. Andrus Ansip, as well as a coveted member of the European Parliament, Vivian Reding.
