Editorial: Surveillance in the Post-Obama Era

During his 2008 campaign, President Obama vowed to assert greater oversight of the massive surveillance apparatus built in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, arguing that the United States needed to strike a better balance between privacy and security and that all intelligence programs should be lawful.”I will provide our intelligence and law enforcement agencies with the tools they need to track and take out the terrorists without undermining our Constitution and our freedom,” Mr. Obama said in 2007.
