The famous dictum of digital guru Stewart Brand, “information wants to be free”, is usually quoted without its binding caveat: “Information also wants to be expensive, and that tension will not go away.”Having seen that tension quickly produce violent shifts in the balance sheets of the newspaper, publishing and music industries – shifts that are still waiting for viable business models – it is now making its implications felt in the most expensive creative medium of all, the film industry.
