Reporting from the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Domain Conference & Expo in Hollywood, the Miami Herald highlights some of the major issues that have come up.The Miami Herald says, “Distresses brought up included the public’s lack of understanding of the industry and the need for transparency in how companies measure the worth of a domain name.”Matt Bentley, chief strategy officer at Sedo.com, said the domain industry is becoming a stronger part of the advertising industry, but firms are hesitant to put their links on generic domain pages full of ad links.”Bentley said corporate advertisers don’t fully understand how domain traffic works.”Further, “Several panelists voiced a common concern: that cybersquatting … is standing in the way of industry growth. And it doesn’t help that only a fraction of the world is aware of the buying and selling of domain names as an industry.”One suggestion reported from Adam Dicker of DNForum.com was “that people put a city and an industry together like OrlandoFlorists or OrlandoComputers and build it into a site full of local advertising and content in the hopes that a local business will want to buy it.”There will be a live auction of more than 250 domain names on Friday with names such as computers.com expected to sell for more than US$1 million. To read more of the Miami Herald’s report, see www.miamiherald.com/business/story/267525.html
