The American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN), who manages internet number resources in North America and many Caribbean and North Atlantic islands, has written to all CEO’s of organisations holding Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) addresses in the Americas to raise awareness of the depletion of IPv4 addresses and to encourage the active adoption of IPv6 addresses.ARIN has warned that IPv4 addresses are likely to run out in the next two years at their current consumption. When IPv4 addresses runs out, ARIN warns organisations they will then be required to use IPv6 addresses, which is currently optional. The move to IPv6 will allow for an almost unlimited supply of addresses (2128 or about 3.4×1038) for devices that connect to the internet including domain names and any internet-connected device.ARIN has warned that organisations need to being planning for IPv6 adoption if they are not already doing so. In addition, to ensure the most efficient use of the current pool of IPv4 addresses, ARIN will require applications for IPv4 address space to include an attestation of accuracy from an organisational officer. This ensures that organisations submitting legitimate requests based on documented need will have ongoing access to IPv4 address space to the maximum extent possible. In its report on the issue, IDG notes this week that “IPv4 depletion is most dire in parts of the world with fast-growing populations of Internet users, such as China and India,” however all other areas of the world are not immune to the pressures.More information on ARIN and its notice to is available from:
