COMMENT: Why Conroy is right about Google & Facebook

There’s been much hullabaloo about Australian communications minister Stephen Conroy’s premeditated attack on the failings of Google and Facebook in a Senate Estimates Committee this week. His critics — led by Greens Senator Scott Ludlam — have accused him of character assassination and retribution for Google’s criticisms of his planned Internet filter. But having read Conroy’s statements to the Senate Committee on Hansard, I’m forced to conclude that he is absolutely right to target Google and Facebook — and that he should actually be lauded for lending his weight to pressure on those two firms to tidy up their act. Whether or not Conroy has ulterior motives is beside the point to my mind.
