The federal government-owned NBN Co internally endorsed controversial Chinese equipment maker Huawei Technologies as a major supplier to the $36 billion national broadband network, but was blocked by the Gillard government on the advice of intelligence agency ASIO.The Australian Financial Review reported at the weekend that Huawei, which counts former foreign minister Alexander Downer and former Victorian premier John Brumby as Australian board members, was told by the Attorney-General’s Department late last year that it was banned from tendering for lucrative NBN contracts because of concerns over cyber attacks originating in China.
