[AAP] Google executive Vint Cerf, one of people credited with building the internet, says it’s a myth to suggest the US controls the technology. The Google executive considered to be one of the fathers of the internet has debunked what he called the “myth” that it is controlled by the United States. While America played an outsized role in how the internet was run when it was founded decades ago, that has long since ceased to be the case, Vint Cerf said on the sidelines of NetMundial, a conference in Brazil on internet governance.

While America played an outsized role in how the Internet was run when it was founded decades ago, that has long since ceased to be the case, Vint Cerf told AFP on the sidelines of NetMundial, a conference in Brazil on Internet governance.”The USA doesn’t control the Internet — that’s a myth,” Cerf said in Sao Paulo.”It may have when I was running the program 40 years ago, yes. But not anymore,” the pioneering computer scientist said during a break in the two-day international gathering.http://news.malaysia.msn.com/sci-tech/internet-co-creator-cerf-debunks-myth-that-us-runs-itBigwigs call for end to US-centric internet governance
Vint Cerf, Tim Berners-Lee and Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff were among the digital big guns to call for a shake up of net governance at NETmundial in Brazil this week.Set against a backdrop of mass surveillance and discomfort with ICANN’s cosy relationship with the US government, companies, diplomats, academics, campaign groups and other stakeholders have come together to re-evaluate how the internet should be governed. The mot du jour at the ” World Cup of internet governance” was “multistakeholderism”: an ugly, awkward word designed to connote a more pluralistic approach to maintaining the net’s infrastructure and enshrining its democratic values. Had you played a buzzword drinking game with that term, you’d have been on the floor within the first hour.
