EURid logoA quarter of websites (26.5%) globally are used for business according to a EURid survey of eight top level domains and three European ccTLDs, with close to one third (31.4%) of websites using .EU domains used for business.

The second most common use for websites according to the survey was “error” (23.5%), then “holding page” (20.6%) and PPC (17.3%), possibly reflecting the low cost of registering domain names. Ten per cent of websites were used by communities.

The survey found that older gTLDs still have distinctive usage profiles. For example, .ORG maintains a high proportion of community websites. And pornography accounted for only 0.4 per cent of websites, contradicting the commonly held perception that the Internet has a large number of pornographic websites. Similarly low percentages were for password-protected and institutional websites.

Findings are based on the results of a manual analysis of 50,000 websites across 11 top-level domains: .BIZ, .COM, .EU, .INFO, .MOBI, .NET, .ORG, .PRO extensions and three un-named European national TLDs. Each website was categorised into one of eight categories: business, community, pay-per-click (PPC), holding page, institutional, password protected, error and pornography.
