Bumper Year For .PT Sees Growth of 23%

Domain name registrations in Portugal’s ccTLD grew by over one fifth in 2020, with a new record of 96,715 new registrations in .pt, 18,020 more than in 2019, which represents a growth of 22.9% and makes 2020 the best ever.

In the first half of 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic in full swing, the DNS.PT Association reports almost 50,000 new .pt domain names were registered, 10,423 more than in the same period in 2019, an increase of 26.35%. April was the month with the highest growth – up by two-thirds (67%) compared to April 2019, as well as the largest number of new domains.

During the Summer, the period of the year in which the number of registrations traditionally slows down, the growth trend continued, with the months of June, July, August and September totalling more than 30 thousand new registrations, comparing to the 23 thousand in 2019.

In turn, the reinforcement of the measures to combat the pandemic announced by the Portuguese government in October again contributed to the increase in the number of registrations, mainly in November, the second highest, with a total of 9,082 domains.

If direct registrations are added to registrations via Empresa na Hora, the total annual value exceeds 130,000, 9,893 more than in 2019.

In addition to the mission as responsible for the management of the Portuguese country code top-level domain (ccTLD), .PT plays an active role in areas such as digital inclusion, digital skills and internet security, by supporting programs such as INCoDe.2030, MUDA , EUSOUDIGITAL, Apps for Good or ‘Engineers for a day’.

Since 2013, the .pt domain has grown consecutively, having achieved the biggest increase ever in the last year. On average, 400 new domains are registered per day in .pt.
