BBC Dumps Commercial Internet-TV Plan

British Broadcasting Corp. and two other TV networks ended an ill-fated attempt to establish a commercial Internet TV service in the U.K. Thursday, agreeing to sell the technology behind the scheme to Arqiva Ltd.Known as Project Kangaroo, it was designed as a commercial version of the BBC’s highly successful iPlayer Internet TV service, which allows users in the U.K. to download almost any BBC TV broadcast from the pervious week. The BBC’s commercial arm, BBC Worldwide, was working with ITV PLC and Channel 4 Television Corp. to create a commercial version of the service that would generate profits by showing ads alongside the TV show.
