Australian govt and US at odds on net filter

The Obama administration has questioned the Rudd government’s plan to introduce an internet filter, saying it runs contrary to the US’s foreign policy of encouraging an open internet to spread economic growth and global security.Officials from the State Department have raised the issue with Australian counterparts as the US mounts a diplomatic assault on internet censorship by governments worldwide.

The federal government’s mandatory internet filtering policy is under fire from academics worried that it will lead to censorship of news and current affairs.Three leading academics, including UNSW Journalism and Media Research director Catharine Lumby, warned that the classification mechanism behind the filter was so broad that it could result in the work of professional and citizen journalists being placed on the filter’s blacklist.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy will hit the radio airwaves live tonight to debate the government’s proposed mandatory internet service provider level filtering scheme with dissenters such as outspoken Internode engineer Mark Newton.The politician will appear on the ABC’s Australia Talks program at 6PM (AEDT). The show will be chaired by ABC presenter Paul Barclay. Also appearing will be Electronic Frontiers Australia (EFA) vice president Colin Jacobs, UNSW journalism professor Catharine Lumby, Internode’s Mark Newton and Michael Grace, regional chief for internet filtering company Netsweeper.
