.at celebrates 20th birthday, nic.at 20th birthday!

20 years nic.at logoIn January 1988, the Austrian Top Level Domain “.at” was registered with IANA (the Internet Assigned Number Authority) and launched under the administrationnic.at logo of the University of Vienna. For the first three years it was only used for academic and research purposes, but in 1991 commercial use of .at domain names commenced, thus laying the foundation for the success story of the internet in Austria.

Then in 1998, nic.at GmbH was founded under the management of Internet Service Providers Austria (ISPA) as the registry for all .at, .co.at and .or.at domains. In the founding year, there were around 31,000 domain names registered. Today there are more than 725,000 active .at-domains, with around 70 per cent held by Austrians and around 20 per cent by Germans.

.at domain names can be registered through Europe Registry here.
