Advertisers today offered a warm welcome to the planned merger of Yahoo and Microsoft’s online search engines, designed to take on the increasing power wielded by Google.The deal, announced on Wednesday, will combine the second and third largest search engines to create what Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer called a real “competitive alternative” in an increasingly important part of the advertising industry.
